Safer Social Event Team Member 2025-2026
The Safer Social Event Team (SSET) trains and supports students in creating safer spaces, engaging in sexual violence prevention outreach, and in responding appropriately and supportively to situations of concern. This program is a partnership between the Sexual Violence Resource Centre and Health & Wellness offices, in their shared pursuit of equipping students in building healthy campus relationships and a culture based on respect and community.
As a member of the SSET team, you will attend different social events on campus to ensure attendees feel safer and supported. Team members will be trained in identifying situations where peers may need support, including the areas of sexual health, mental health, harm reduction and substance use. Outreach activities including health education and student engagement will also be a focus of this role. Team members will also be trained to practice basic conflict resolution and de-escalation. This position will require significant collaboration between team members and with other campus supports.
Scheduling for this role will consist of primarily evening and weekend shifts, with an increased demand at the start of each term. There will also be opportunities to engage in outreach activities during daytime hours throughout the entire academic year.
Position Responsibilities:
Following the direction of the Senior SSET member and/or SSET leadership team, foster a safe, supportive, and inclusive atmosphere at campus events
Maintain a trauma-informed and non-judgmental approach when interacting with event attendees
Proactively interact with event attendees to provide education within the areas of sexual health, mental health, and substance use through a harm reduction lens
Safely intervene and de-escalate situations as needed. Assist in crisis situations related to physical and emotional well-being, sexual health, and mental health
Exercise good judgment and critical thinking skills, particularly in stressful or evolving situations
Engage campus community in maintaining a safer campus environment
Participate in campus events such as Welcome Day, UMSU Street Party to educate UM community on topics related to consent, harm reduction, and sexual health
Understand limits of the SSET role and recognize when to make referrals to event organizers, other campus stakeholders or the SSET leadership team
Maintain an awareness of on-campus resources as well as university policies and procedures related to respect and safety
Attend a minimum of 3 events per term as part of the SSET team
Attend scheduled meetings and ongoing trainings offered by the SSET leadership team
Qualifications:
Fulltime University of Manitoba undergraduate or graduate student in a degree program with related experience and skills
Successful completion of at least 1 year of university study
Knowledge of and experience in applying principles of public health, health messaging and communication, and harm reduction
Knowledge of campus sexual violence and associated strategies and harm prevention models
Experience working with diverse and at-risk populations preferred
Required skills include:
Strong organizational abilities;
Excellent interpersonal communication skills, with a genuine interest in approaching new people and connecting with others on a peer-to-peer level
The ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a team environment;
Self-initiating, self-motivated and self-directed with the ability to work independently and take initiative;
Ability to manage multiple demands;
Excellent organizational skills and reliability;
Assets for this position include:
Volunteering and public speaking experience;
Ability to manage and resolve conflict and challenging situations;
Experience as a leader in a work or volunteer position.
Strong work ethic and social skills
Successful applicants will be expected to attend mandatory, paid in-person training on the following dates:
Tuesday, August 26th, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
Thursday, August 28th, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
Facilitators will be paid for training, facilitated sessions, as well as all team meetings.
Hourly wage is $18.00/hour plus 6% vacation
