Position Summary:
Student Wellness at the University of Manitoba is seeking a Student Wellness Centre Assistant to help in delivering quality health and wellness education and programming to the campus community. Under supervision of the Coordinator, Student Health and Wellness Education and in collaboration with the Student Wellness Program Assistant, the Student Wellness Centre Assistant will help with the assessment, planning, implementation and coordination of wellness programs and initiatives for all University of Manitoba students, as well as support the overall functioning of the Student Wellness Centre (SWC).
Student Wellness exists to enhance the individual and collective health of the campus community through a wide range of programs, services, and resources. Through partnerships with on and off campus stakeholders, we work to create programming, provide direct student support and initiatives that support healthier choices for students to reach their fullest potential. Our goal is to create a safe and supportive campus community that promotes holistic wellness through collaboration, assessment, communication and skill building.
Within Student Wellness, the Student Wellness Centre (SWC) is a welcoming and inclusive space that is dedicated to fostering community-building, engagement in varied wellness practices. The SWC reflects, celebrates, and honors the diversity of our UM community. The foundational values of the SWC are respect, inclusion, community, and holistic wellness.
Responsibilities of the Student Wellness Centre Assistant:
Oversee daily Student Wellness Centre activities under the supervision of the Coordinator, Student Health and Wellness Education
Coordinate and support the operation of the Student Wellness Centre
Assist with development and implementation of evaluative measures for Student Wellness programming and initiatives including the Student Wellness Centre
Assist with all health and wellness programming and content development. This includes: researching needs, initiating, developing and evaluating student centered health education programs to ensure that identified concerns are addressed in accordance with current health promotion theory and practice, and providing direct service to students. Primary focus areas will be mental health, sexual health, physical health and harm reduction initiatives for substance use.
Conduct presentations on the Student Wellness Program or health topics as needed
Assist with health-related communications and messaging. Emphasis will be on participatory/interactive material and use of new technologies and social media
Respond to requests and inquiries from outside organizations, student groups and other campus community members as appropriate
In collaboration with Student Wellness staff, provide support and training for The Healthy U Peer Health Educators program and other volunteer peer programs
Assists in summarizing data for campus wide surveys including the National College Health Assessment (NCHA), the Canadian Campus Wellbeing Survey (CCWS), and the Canadian Postsecondary Education Alcohol and Drug Use Survey (CPADS).
Participates in campus activities including orientations and special events as appropriate.
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Undergraduate or graduate student at the University of Manitoba
Full-time student for 2025/2026 academic year
Successful completion of at least 2 years of university study with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is required
Knowledge and application of the principles of public health, health messaging and communication, holism, harm reduction, health promotion and prevention
Knowledge of cultural competency and commitment to advocating for holistic wellness
Knowledge of health issues and needs that affect the post-secondary population
Experience working with diverse and at-risk populations
Required Skills:
Self-initiating, self-motivated and self-directive with the ability to work independently and take initiative
Strong written and oral communication abilities
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
Able to effectively organize and manage multiple demands
Experience or knowledge within these skills will be considered an asset
Public speaking experience
Ability to manage and resolve conflict and challenging situations
Experience within a leadership role
Relevant degree program and related experience and skills
Knowledge of health issues and needs that affect the post-secondary population
Knowledge of and comfort with sexual/mental health promotion and substance use and related topics
Knowledge of digital media communication
2025 – 2026 commitment:
Attend and complete mandatory fall training and team building on September from 8:30am-4:30PM and September from 2:30-5:00pm
Be available each Friday in September from 2:30 – 4:30 pm for additional topic related training
Work Schedule
2025-2026 Fall and Winter terms: Monday – Friday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, up to 20 hours per week; occasional evening and weekend work may be necessary
2026 Spring and Summer: Monday – Friday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, up to 30 hours per week; occasional evening and weekend work may be necessary
Hourly Wage: $18/hour + 6% vacation pay
Expected Start Date: Monday, August 18, 2025
